Tudor Place, shown here, sits on a rise in Georgetown and was built for Martha Parke Custis Peter, a granddaughter of Martha Washington. Its design is generally credited to William Thornton, the first architect of the United States Capitol. The house reflects the Federal style of the early republic, with its symmetrical facade and restrained classical detailing. The Peter family occupied it for generations, and it later opened to the public as a museum, which helps explain why so much of the original character has survived.
