This floor plan documents Tudor Place, the Georgetown house that Thomas and Martha Custis Peter had built at 1644 31st Street NW. Martha Parke Custis Peter was a granddaughter of Martha Washington, and the house became a family seat on a hill above the Potomac. The design is usually credited to William Thornton, the first architect of the U.S. Capitol, and the house was completed around 1816. The plan is worth studying for its Federal-style arrangement of rooms, which shows how a prominent Washington family organized entertaining and daily life in the early republic.
