Pictured is the house at 2111 Bancroft Place NW, which the 1920 Boyd's directory lists as the home of Mrs. Clara Ambler, widow of Griffith Ambler. Bancroft Place is a residential street in northwest Washington, part of a neighborhood that filled with substantial houses in the early twentieth century as the city grew beyond its downtown core. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington streets and buildings for decades, made the picture, so it offers a record of how a private residence looked during the years between about 1909 and 1932.
