Suter's Tavern stood at the corner of K Street and 31st in Georgetown, then a separate river town that was absorbed into Washington in 1871 and that kept a distinct character of its own. Taverns like this one served as neighborhood gathering spots, where workers from the nearby waterfront, canal, and mills came for drink, meals, and conversation. Many such establishments in the district were run by German-American proprietors and were known for their beer. The photograph, made sometime between 1900 and 1950, offers a glimpse of the storefront and street life of a working neighborhood before Prohibition ended the era of the corner saloon.
