Inside the Capitol theater at 1405 F Street Northwest, a staircase rises past the lobby in a view that shows how much attention downtown Washington theaters paid to their entrances. The photograph, credited to a photographer named Schutz and numbered G-1862, dates from sometime between 1900 and 1940, a period when movie houses and vaudeville stages were turning the city's central business district into an entertainment corridor. Lobbies like this one were meant to make a visit feel like an occasion, with stairs, ornament, and open space drawing patrons in before the show began. Looking closely at the stairway reveals the materials and proportions that made such interiors memorable.
