Few buildings in Washington carry as heavy a history as the theater on 10th Street, where John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. By the 1870s the building had been closed to audiences and given over to federal offices, including army medical and records units. The photograph belongs to the Brady-Handy collection, built from Mathew Brady's Civil War-era negatives and later expanded by Levin Handy to document the capital's streets and public buildings. The caption details for this view are unverified, so the exact vantage point and neighboring buildings are worth confirming.
