Few events of 1865 were pictured as quickly as the shooting at Ford's theater, and this Currier & Ives lithograph reconstructs the scene of April 14. John Wilkes Booth, an actor who knew the theater well, slipped into the presidential box during a performance of the comedy *Our American Cousin* and shot Abraham Lincoln at close range. Lincoln died the next morning. The New York firm sold many such prints to a nation in mourning, so the image reflects both the event and the public appetite for it. Booth himself was killed in Virginia less than two weeks later.
