Among the Washington views in the National Photo Company collection, this 8 by 6 inch glass negative stands out for placing the White House and the Treasury Building in one wide frame. Dated 1865, it dates from the year the Civil War ended and Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, when the capital was moving from wartime strain toward peace. The title was supplied by the company and has not been verified, and this is a copy negative, so its surface shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration in the original coatings.
