Few places in Washington carry as much Civil War memory as the Soldiers' Home grounds on the city's northern edge, and this exterior view shows the main house set among trees. Congress established the home in 1851 as a residence for aging veterans of the regular army, and President Abraham Lincoln spent summers in the nearby Anderson Cottage during the war years. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the city and its institutions, made this picture around 1895. It presents the house as a settled, peaceful institution rather than a wartime setting.
