Anderson Cottage, a Gothic Revival house on the grounds of the U.S. Soldiers' Home, is best known as the summer residence where Abraham Lincoln stayed in 1862 and 1863, commuting from there into the White House. Lincoln is said to have drafted parts of the Emancipation Proclamation while living on the grounds. This photogravure, a fine-line process that reproduced photographs with rich tones, dates from between 1880 and 1920, when the Soldiers' Home was a busy residential community for veterans. The cannons that often appear in views of the grounds were displayed as reminders of the Civil War service of the men who lived there.
