The dining room in the U.S. Grant Building shows a space built for the daily meals of veterans at the Soldiers' Home in northwest Washington, a federal residence for aging and disabled former soldiers. The building was named for Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who later served as president, and it reflects the home's role in caring for men who had served in the nation's wars. The record dates the photograph only roughly, to between 1890 and 1920, so the room's furnishings and arrangement are best read as a general picture of institutional dining in that period. The home's grounds, which also held the cottage where President Abraham Lincoln spent summers during the Civil War, give the setting added weight.
