The Anderson Building stood on the grounds of the U.S. Soldiers' Home in northwest Washington, a veterans' residence that Congress founded in 1851 and that Abraham Lincoln knew well, since he spent summers at a cottage on the same grounds during the Civil War. This c1891 photogravure, issued by the New York firm of A. Witteman, shows the building as the home's residents and visitors would have seen it in the 1890s. Photogravure was a costly, finely detailed process that gave printed views a richness closer to a photograph, which explains why publishers used it for architectural subjects like this one.
