Two soldiers stroll in the foreground at the corner of 10th and D Streets Northwest, with the Old Post Office and its clock tower rising behind them. Completed in 1899 in the Romanesque Revival style, the building was one of the most recognizable landmarks in downtown Washington, and its tower stayed a fixture of the skyline as the city filled with uniformed personnel during the Second World War. The date on the record is approximate, placed around 1944, so the picture likely shows the wartime capital at a busy moment.
