Two herdic cabs stand in the foreground while mounted soldiers ride past the Willard Hotel, a landmark on Pennsylvania Avenue within sight of the White House. The herdic, a low two-wheeled passenger cab that entered from the rear, was a common sight on American city streets in the early 1900s, before motorized taxis took over. The Willard drew politicians, visitors and army officers to the capital, so the mix of horse-drawn traffic and uniformed riders captures the everyday street life of that period in Washington.
