Taken from a balcony, this view records the New Willard Hotel, the Pennsylvania Avenue landmark a short walk from the White House. The newer building opened in 1901 on the site of the earlier Willard, and it became a favorite gathering place for politicians, diplomats and visitors. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer known for documenting the city's buildings and interiors, made the picture. The cyanotype process gives the print its distinctive blue tone, a technique more often used for architectural copies and records.
