The Shoreham Hotel, a large apartment-style hotel on Calvert Street in the Woodley Park area of northwest Washington, is the subject here, shown from the outside rather than its interiors or guest rooms. The hotel opened around 1930 and was built to serve visitors and residents in a growing neighborhood along Connecticut Avenue. Theodore Horydczak, a commercial photographer, documented Washington's buildings and streets across several decades, and his work captures how the capital looked between the wars. Pictures like this one record the city's architecture at a time when hotels were becoming a visible part of its streetscape.
