Few hotels in antebellum Washington were as tied to the city's public life as Willard's, which stood on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House and drew congressmen, office seekers and visiting dignitaries. This wood engraving, from the Willard Family Collection, presents the hotel as part of the everyday street life of the capital around 1850. The hotel's crowded lobby is often linked to the origin of the word "lobbying," and Abraham Lincoln stayed there in February 1861 before his inauguration. The print is worth a close look for its record of the building and its surroundings in the years before the Civil War.
