The registration counter at the New Willard Hotel marks the point where guests checked in at one of Washington's most prominent hotels, a place where visiting officials and politicians often stayed. The hotel stood on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House, and its 1901 building replaced an earlier Willard that had long hosted members of Congress and other notable visitors. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented the capital's interiors and buildings, recorded the scene as a cyanotype, a blue-toned process that gives the image its distinctive color.
