The lobby of the New Willard, which opened on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1901, was a place where senators, diplomats and lobbyists met to talk business. The earlier Willard, dating to the 1850s, had already drawn that crowd, and the term "lobbyist" is often traced to the men who waited in its public rooms to press their causes on Congress. This cyanotype comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston collection, which documents Washington's buildings and interiors, and it shows the room's architecture and the open floor where that daily traffic unfolded.
