This photograph shows the lobby of the Grace Dodge Hotel, a residence in Washington, D.C., named for Grace Hoadley Dodge, the New York philanthropist who was active in the YWCA and in efforts to support young working women. Such hotels offered respectable, affordable lodging for women who lived on their own wages, and their common rooms were meant to feel orderly and welcoming. The print comes from the Harris & Ewing studio, a Washington firm that photographed the city's buildings, institutions, and street life for decades. The caption card gives no date, so the lobby's exact appearance and period are best judged from its furnishings and details.
