This print gathers eight Washington buildings onto a single sheet: seven hotels, including the St. James, the Ebbitt House, Willard's and the National, along with the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad depot. Composites like this were typical of late nineteenth-century souvenir view books, which let visitors and local boosters see a city's principal lodgings and its rail gateway at a glance. Photolithography, which turned photographs into printable plates, made such inexpensive multi-view pages practical. Placing so many hotels beside the railway station also suggests how much of the capital's travel and business ran through these addresses in the years before 1900.
