Few pictures on this wall show the Executive Mansion in color, and this lithograph, printed in Baltimore by E. Sachse & Co., captures the White House as it looked in the years around the Civil War. The print comes from an illustrated album of Washington City, a format that brought views of federal buildings and streets to a national audience. During the 1860s the building was the home and office of President Abraham Lincoln, so the view shows a working seat of government as well as a national landmark. Sachse's firm was known for city views of this kind, and the color work is worth a close look for its detail of the grounds and façade.
