Few sites in the capital carried more weight in the mid-nineteenth century than the U.S. Arsenal, which stood where the Potomac and Anacostia rivers meet and is the subject of this color lithograph. The arsenal stored and produced arms and ordnance for the federal army, and its grounds also held a military prison. In 1865, four people convicted in the conspiracy to kill Abraham Lincoln were hanged there. The print was issued by E. Sachse & Co., a Baltimore firm known for colored views of American cities, and its date is recorded only as falling between 1845 and 1880.
