Five stone arches carry the Georgetown Aqueduct over Rock Creek just before the creek meets the Potomac, and this color lithograph shows the structure as it stood in the mid-1860s. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal's water traffic crossed on it, and the span was completed in the 1840s as part of the canal's push westward. During the Civil War, the aqueduct's wide deck also carried Union army wagons and foot traffic between Georgetown and Virginia. The print was drawn from nature by F. Dielman and lithographed in Baltimore by E. Sachse & Co., a firm known for city views.
