This lithograph shows the east front of the United States Capitol, the side facing the city and the Potomac approach, rather than the west front that later became the familiar view. Its artist, August Köllner, drew the scene from nature, and the stone was worked by Deroy and printed by Cattier, a collaboration typical of mid-century European print houses. The sheet was published in 1848 by Goupil, Vibert & Co., whose firm operated in both New York and Paris. The building was still unfinished at that time, and the cast-iron dome that defines the skyline today would not be added for another decade.
