The west front of the Capitol, seen from the City Hall, is the vantage point that sets this lithograph apart from the many views of the building's more familiar east side. Published in Philadelphia in 1832 by Childs & Inman, the print was drawn by T. Doughty, who sketched the scene and worked it up for the press. In 1832 the Capitol was still an unfinished work: its central dome was not yet built, and the western approach was far from the polished grounds visitors see today. The print's subject list also notes cropland, a reminder of how much open farmland still bordered the young federal city.
