Looking west from the Capitol dome, this lithograph gives a rare high vantage over the young federal city, with the Mall and its surrounding streets spread out below. A. Sachse & Co., a Baltimore firm known for detailed bird's-eye city views, printed it in the late nineteenth century, a period when Washington was growing quickly and its skyline was still dominated by government buildings and open ground. Artists in this genre drew from elevated viewpoints to show streets, public buildings and monuments in a single panoramic sheet, so the print works as both a map and a portrait of the city as it stood between 1860 and 1890.
