From the dome of the U.S. Capitol, this lithograph looks west across the city, offering a bird's-eye panorama that few vantage points in the capital could match. Edward Sachse & Co., a Baltimore firm known for detailed city views, produced it around 1885, when Washington was expanding rapidly after the Civil War. Follow the National Mall toward the Washington Monument, completed in 1884, and notice how the artists drew streets, parks and rooftops as one map-like scene.
