A morning scene on the Fourth of July, 1876, centered on a flag that had by then flown for a full century, sets this print apart from other views on the board. The National Chromo Co. of Philadelphia published it as an "oilchromo," a chromolithograph meant to imitate an oil painting, from a design by E. P. Fabronius and L. Restein. The print appeared in the centennial year, when Philadelphia hosted the nation's major celebration of its independence, and it reflects the patriotic mood of that summer.
