This photograph records the parade held during the 26th annual encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union Civil War veterans' organization, in Washington, D.C., on September 20, 1892. The encampments were reunions where aging veterans marched, renewed old comradeships, and pressed for pensions and other benefits for former soldiers and their families. Because the parade passed through the capital, it draws together the city's streets, the crowds lining them, and the veterans themselves, many of whom were by then well into middle age. The record credits Geo Prince with the image.
