Rather than a single building, this chromolithograph offers a bird's-eye view of the whole city of Washington, with the United States Capitol among its most prominent landmarks. Issued around 1869 by the Baltimore firm E. Sachse & Co., it belongs to a popular 1860s genre of panoramic city views, whose map-like perspectives let viewers take in streets, parks, and public buildings at once. The print appeared only a few years after the Capitol's cast-iron dome was completed in 1866, and it shows a capital still growing after the Civil War. Its color, built up from several lithographic stones, makes it a useful record of the city's layout at that moment.
