Finley U.S. General Hospital, one of the many military hospitals that sprang up around Washington during the Civil War, is the subject of this color lithograph published in New York in 1864. By then the city had become a major center of Union medical care, as wounded and sick soldiers arrived from campaigns in Virginia and Maryland faster than existing wards could hold them. Charles Magnus, a New York lithographer and publisher, issued the sheet for a public eager to see the institutions caring for the nation's soldiers. Views like this one are useful today for showing the layout and scale of wartime medical facilities.
