This bird's-eye view shows the Douglas and Stanton hospitals in Washington, D.C., two of the many facilities that filled the city during the Civil War, when wounded soldiers arrived by the thousands after battles in Virginia and Maryland. Drawn from above, the color lithograph lets viewers see how the grounds were laid out, with rows of wards, support buildings, and open walkways arranged to separate patients and limit the spread of disease. The print was issued by Charles Magnus, a New York publisher known for detailed views of cities and institutions, and it was made around 1864, when the capital's hospital system was at its largest.
