A medicine man bends over a sick patient in this color lithograph, drawn by Capt. S. Eastman of the U.S. Army and printed by C. Schuessele. It appeared as plate 46 in Henry R. Schoolcraft's *Indian Tribes of the United States*, published in Philadelphia in 1851, a multivolume survey of Native peoples that relied heavily on army officers' sketches and reports. The healer is shown as an exotic figure for a white audience, so the picture reveals as much about mid-century American assumptions about Native medicine as it does about the practice itself.
