Few patent medicines of the late 1800s were advertised as boldly as Dr. M.A. Simmons Liver Medicine, and this chromolithograph shows how the product was pitched to the public. The large sheet, dated 1886 and credited to the St. Louis and New York firm A. Gast Bank-Note & Lithographing Co., displays the multicolor printing that let manufacturers turn advertising into eye-catching display pieces. Like many proprietary remedies of the era, Simmons's tonic was sold on promises to relieve liver complaints and digestive troubles without a physician's involvement. Such posters now show how medicine, commerce and mass printing overlapped before federal food and drug rules tightened.
