Campbell U.S. General Hospital was one of the many Union military hospitals that ringed Washington, D.C., during the Civil War, when the city became a major destination for wounded soldiers. This hand-colored lithograph was published in New York by Charles Magnus around 1864, a period when his firm produced many views of army hospitals and camps for a public eager to see the places where its sons, brothers, and husbands were being cared for. Such prints typically show the layout of wards, tents, and grounds in an orderly, reassuring light, so it is worth looking at them as much for what they chose to show as for what they leave out.
