The corner of Broad Street and Washington Avenue in Philadelphia is the setting for this color lithograph of the Citizens Volunteer Hospital, drawn and lithographed by J. Queen and printed by P.S. Duval & Son. The print dates from between 1861 and 1865, when Philadelphia, a major rail and supply hub, took in large numbers of wounded soldiers and volunteer groups opened hospitals to supplement the army's own facilities. Its catalog subjects tie it to the medical side of the war, and the view offers a useful record of how these temporary wards were presented to the public at the time.
