Armory Square Hospital, one of the largest Union army hospitals in Washington, was set up in a former Armory Square building near the Capitol during the Civil War, and this view of one of its wards shows rows of iron bedsteads with wheeled chairs in the aisles. The record dates the photograph only to between 1861 and 1865, though the print itself was made later, so the scene reflects the crowded conditions that followed the major battles of the war. Ward interiors like this one were photographed to document medical care for the wounded, and the wheeled chairs in the foreground hint at how patients who could not walk were moved about the room.
