A watercolor made for Scribner's magazine, probably around 1905, takes its title from a line describing a vigil kept through the night until gray dawn lit the sky. The phrasing reads like a passage from a story, so the picture was likely an illustration for fiction or an article rather than a stand-alone scene. Scribner's, a New York monthly, ran many illustrated pieces in this period, and the bedside watch was a familiar subject in writing about illness and family devotion. The date appears in the record only as an estimate, so it is best read with some caution.
