The title's image of a dawn breaking over polio research sets this 1949 poster apart from others on the subject. Herbert Bayer, the Austrian-born designer who trained at the Bauhaus and settled in New York in 1938, produced it for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, which funded research and patient care during the disease's postwar epidemics. In 1949 polio was still widely feared and left many children paralyzed, and no vaccine would exist until Jonas Salk's field trials in 1954 and 1955. The poster's hopeful tone reflects a public campaign that relied on donations to keep research moving.
