The poster's title, "One of them had polio," presents a group of children at play and suggests that a child with the disease can still take part through teamwork and recovery. Swiss-born designer Herbert Matter made it for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, the group better known as the March of Dimes, which raised money for polio care and research. In the early 1950s, polio frightened American parents, and epidemics filled hospital wards each summer, so posters like this one aimed to turn that fear into support. Matter's clean, modernist layout reflects the graphic style he brought to American design.
