The slogan "You need only one soap" sets this 1898 chromolithograph apart from the many soap posters of its era. Procter & Gamble introduced Ivory in 1879 as a mild bar that floated, and the company built much of its reputation on purity. The Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati and New York printed the sheet in full color. The catalog also files it under frontier and pioneer life, which suggests the advertisers wanted to show that one bar of soap could handle every household task, even far from town.
