Rather than a named sitter, this chromolithograph presents "Beauty" as an idealized young girl, with the title doing much of the work. Printed around 1869 by Strobridge & Co. of Cincinnati for R. Wilson & Co., it was made as a tobacco package label, a form that put bright, eye-catching figures on everyday goods. Cincinnati was a major lithography center at the time, and its firms produced such labels in large numbers. Its subject headings pair the girl with cosmetics, a reminder of how advertisers traded on the promise of beauty.
