Here a girl and a string of pearls are the two subjects named in the record, and the title, "Pearl of the Orient," suggests that the jewelry was the selling point. The print was made by the New York firm Major & Knapp and served as a tobacco package label, a colorful wrapper meant to catch a buyer's eye on crowded shop shelves during the 1860s. Color lithography was especially popular for commercial pieces like this one, so the label also shows how fashion and luxury were presented to ordinary consumers in that decade.
