Few sheet music covers from the early 1850s show a dress reform in action, but this hand-colored lithograph for the *Bloomer Waltz* does, presenting a summer costume as its selling point. The bloomer, a short skirt worn over loose trousers, took its name from Amelia Bloomer, the New York temperance and women's rights editor who promoted the style in her newspaper *The Lily* beginning in 1849. Its appearance on a popular dance tune shows how quickly the controversial fashion reached middle-class parlors. The print was made by the New York firm Sarony & Major and published by William Hall & Son around 1851.
