Dedicated to Mrs. Lydia Bloomer, this sheet music cover shows how quickly dress reform became popular entertainment. Printed in Philadelphia in 1851 by Lee & Walker, the lithograph was drawn by J. Queen and run on P.S. Duval's steam lithographic press. Its title, "The New Costume Polka," invokes the loose trousers and short skirt that Amelia Bloomer had championed in her newspaper, The Lily, since the late 1840s, and the name soon attached itself to the outfit. The cover is worth noticing for how it turns a debated question about women's clothing into a piano piece for the parlor.
