A trade advertisement from Philadelphia, this lithograph with hand-applied watercolor shows the wholesale and retail hat, cap and fur warehouse of O.N. Thacher, with the image itself serving as the shop's sales pitch. The print was drawn on stone by James Queen and issued by the Philadelphia firm of P.S. Duval around 1840, when color lithography was a fashionable and fairly costly way for businesses to advertise. The subject headings point to the trade's raw materials as well: beaver and other pelts, which were central to American hatmaking in these decades and were prepared and sold in shops like this one.
