Fischer's Own" was a tobacco brand name printed across this color label, which Bliss Moore & Co. of Chicago issued and Donaldson & Elmes of Cincinnati lithographed around 1872. Tobacco makers of the 1870s often used eye-catching pictures on packages and labels to set their goods apart on shop shelves, and many of those images showed women in the fashions of the day. The label's copyright notice, which names Allen & Ellis, shows that the design was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that protected the artwork from being copied. Its clothing offers a record of how dress looked in the early 1870s.
