This color lithograph caricature shows the playwright W. S. Gilbert, drawn by the Vanity Fair artist who signed himself "Spy," and it appeared in the magazine's issue of December 10, 1881. The caricature ties Gilbert to *Patience*, the comic opera he wrote with Arthur Sullivan, which had opened earlier that year in London and mocked the aesthetic movement's cult of velvet suits, lilies, and languid poses. Because the opera made fashion its target, the sitter's dress is worth a close look: the print captures how Victorian Londoners read clothing as a statement of taste and class. Vanity Fair's weekly caricatures, reproduced as lithographs by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, were a popular way for readers to follow the theater and personalities of the day.
