This caricature takes its name from the New York Herald, the American daily that James Gordon Bennett Sr. founded in 1835 and that became one of the most widely read newspapers of the nineteenth century. It appeared in London's *Vanity Fair* in 1884 as No. 317 in the magazine's "Men of the Day" series, which paired a colored lithograph with a short caption. The drawing is credited to "Nemo" and printed by Vincent Brooks, the London firm that produced most of the magazine's plates. Notice how the series built each portrait around a single caricatured trait, so the newspaper reference and the exaggerated features work together.
